The word "Gospel" is the English translation for the Greek word "euangelion" which simply means "good news." The central truth of the gospel is that God has provided a way to be made perfect  through the gift of His son (Jesus Christ) to the world. Since we are not perfect, and have rebelled against God, we are deserving of judgment. The good news is that Jesus suffered as a sacrifice for our rebellion, overcame death, and now offers a share in His triumph to all who will believe in this message. The gospel is good news because it is a gift of God, not something that must be earned by good works.

"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." -Romans 5:8 NIV

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." -John 3:16 NIV

"For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say 'No' to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good." -Titus 2:11-14 NIV
